What is PluginDoctor? Non-geeks: please be patient, as this is for you, too. Software engineers and programmers spend a lot of time verifying that their creations actually do what they were programmed to do.
Most of it is predicated on the notion that any algorithm, given a specific set of inputs, will consistently produce the same output. Repeatability is the foundation of software testing. How would I know if the algorithm was working properly? Well, this is very much a real-life challenge for software testers: how to validate processes when the input data is unpredictable. Few things are more unpredictable than digital audio data.
It normally never happens. This is vastly more complex than, say, an accounting program. Consider, for example, a compressor. Rather, the multiplier changes moment-to-moment based on how the input values have changed over the past few seconds or fractions of seconds. Developers often create tools to make their software testing easier, but most keep those tools to themselves.
Christian Budde was the first to make his plugin tester available to anyone, releasing VST Plugin Analyzer as a freebie. Thankful though we were for his generosity, Christian never took it further because a it already did what he needed it to do, and b he could not realistically provide end-user support for a product that made no money.
Consequently, although useful there was never a bit version, no official user manual, and no Mac version. Even some bit plugins were incompatible with it. At this point, you may still be wondering what it actually does. On a Mac, it can also load AU plugins. It can even perform the particularly challenging test of peeking inside a compressor to see exactly how it responds under different conditions and settings.
This graphic is showing the frequency spectrum of the output Boogex is producing. If you had any doubt, this clearly shows that Boogex is definitely not a linear processor! But do these pretty graphs provide any actionable information? Actually, yes. Turn on the cabinet simulator and see how it affects the frequency distribution.
Now drop in a different distortion plugin and compare it to Boogex. At the time of this writing, there are five tests that PluginDoctor can perform: linear analysis, harmonic analysis, oscilloscope, dynamics and performance. In the previous picture, we were looking at the results of the Linear Analysis test. Consequently, displays from different analyzers will often look quite different despite showing exactly the same information.
Most can be customized, however, so that their graphs look the same. This test shows how the plugin under test affects frequency response, by applying a pulsed white noise test signal and measuring the output with a spectrum analyzer.
There are three quality settings which you can use to increase the FFT buffer size for more accuracy but at the cost of higher CPU usage. Most of the time, the default normal setting will do just fine.
Sometimes, the results are disappointing. Other times, they reassure you that your investment in high-end plugins was justified. For example, have a look at the first image at the very top of this article. It shows a parametric equalizer FabFilter Pro-Q2 under test, with the output spectrum displayed in PluginDoctor on the right. This illustrates the significance of graphical scaling — the images are actually displaying the same data, but they appear different because the scaling is different.
Under closer inspection, we can see that PluginDoctor is in fact confirming that the Pro-Q filters are delivering exactly what they were configured to do. No big surprise, of course.August 5th, Plugindoctor v1. This feature has often been requested by Plugindoctor users and can make it more easy for you to match the settings of two different plugins as close as possible.

At the same time, Plugindoctor has been updated to v1. Of course, a few stability issues have also been ironed out. Have fun! Previous versions will remain available, of course, but to get your hand on the latest and greatest, this might be the time to finally update to AAX.
Additional new feature: more than one curve can be stored for easy comparison, and not only in linear analysis, but also in harmonic analysis mode. Would you like to test that magic EQ people keep talking about on podcasts? Do you want to verify that one manufacturer's EQ is sonically identical as another's except for the graphics? Plugindoctor will show you. I can hear the cranks in the audience bitching that we should use our ears. To quote Billie Eilish, "Duh!
It's human nature that we're drawn to attractive products, but it can unduly influence our evaluation. Audio software testing is certainly one area where measurements remain relevant. I wanted to send a love letter to DDMF. As it turned out, a few were similar, some added harmonic distortion reflecting their reference model, while another imparted a 2 dB curve despite all controls being set to zero.
I strive to restrain my language in reviews, but there are a lot of plug-ins with marketing promises that are complete bullshit. If you want to know which titles I'm referring to, get a copy of Plugindoctor. Rely on your experiments. DDMF offers a demo and a day money-back guarantee. For acousticians and those engaged in research and development, the ability to measure attributes of rooms, speaker systems, and audio circuits is obviously invaluable.
While the need for this EastWest has really made a name for itself in producing great sounds. Its Symphonic Orchestra libraries have set a high standard and are considered a must-have by an enormous number of composers This is one very amazing, albeit very specialized, piece of software.

You've probably seen the ads and know that the DigiWanting to be helpful, but embarrassed by my ignorance, my first stop was the SSL website to see just what the heck an LMC-1 was. Unfortunately, SSL had wiped all references to this plugin from its pages. Of course, the internet never forgets and I was able to find online discussions about the LMC-1 from its introduction back in The talkback feature lets engineers in the control room communicate with musicians in the tracking room that are separated by soundproof glass.
It gained notoriety in the 80s when engineers began using it as a special effect, especially on drums. Now knowing what the LMC-1 was and what it sounded like, I was fairly certain that the effect could be replicated using other plugins. I found a schematic diagram online, which revealed a fairly simple feedback compressor circuit, further suggesting that a reasonably close software emulation might be possible. The next step was to figure out exactly what the LMC-1 really does under the hood.
Enter PluginDoctor, the secret-revealer. Note: if you have the LMC-1 plugin on hand and want to duplicate my steps, I recommend that you use the bit version of PluginDoctor when testing this or any other bit plugin.
As the screenshot below shows, there are steep low- and high-pass filters in play that drastically narrow the frequency response. That, of course, should be easy enough to replicate with almost any EQ. However, in order for this information to be broadly useful to others, it ideally needed to be accomplished using some free bit equalizer.
Sure enough, I was able to get pretty close using MEqualizer from that collection. Here are the settings I used with MEqualizer. I ran two instances of PluginDoctor side-by-side to make the visual comparison easier. This revealed a high compression ratio and hard knee. This, however, did not satisfy my self-imposed restriction of doing it all with free plugins. As it turned out, I was able to do that.
In fact, I not only simulated the transfer curve using a free compressor, I was also able to implement another key characteristic of the LMC-1 using that compressor.
The sharp Pro-C settings shown earlier actually got pretty close. So there you go; two plugins to emulate the LMC Chances are you can do the same thing using stock plugins from your DAW. The key is being able to objectively analyze your results, which PluginDoctor lets you do. First name. Last name. Review – PluginDoctor from DDMF
Here are some practical tips to help you bake better gluten-free bread. Yeast loves a warm environment and bread will rise more quickly and completely when ingredients are at room temperature rather than cold. Gluten-free flours are often stored in the refrigerator or freezer. Using chilled ingredients will significantly slow the yeasts' ability to leaven bread. A convenient way to bring chilled flours to room temperature is to measure flour(s) for your recipe and place in a bowl on the counter the night before baking.
For perishable ingredients, like eggs and milk, set on the counter about 2 hours before preparing your recipe. Just like bread made with wheat, high protein content in gluten-free flour adds structure and flavor. Sorghum, millet, amaranth, teff, gluten-free oatmeal, and buckwheat all contain more protein than rice flour.
